Malay – Buying a Flight Ticket, Lesson 2

Dialogue 2

And then.. kalau saya nak ambil tiket balik berapa ya? …harga untuk esok
An then.. if I want to take return ticket how much (is it) ya? … the price for tomorrow
Saya nak waktunya malam jugak
I want the time in the evening too
Harganya tak sama ya pergi balik
The price is not the same (for) going and return
Tapi kalau pergi balik ni ambil besok balik besok RM317 (tiga ratus tujuh belas ringgit)
But if this return (ticket) (you) take tomorrow (and) return tomorrow (it is) RM317

Lesson

1. You can see over and over again the phrase saya nak, this means I want, but the proper malay would be saya hendak or saya mahu
2. The word jugak comes from the word juga. The pronunciation seems to have a letter k, but in writing, the k should be ommitted!
3. Tak sama is short for tidak sama, meaning not the same.  If the word tak is placed at the end of a sentence, it means a question, but if it is used with a verb, it means not
4. The word ni is just a slang, it comes from the word ini, meaning this. If English likes to use it when referring to a thing, Malays like to use ni for the same purpose

Island Hopping

Dialogue

This location here is called Tanjung Malai
Lokasi ini dinamakan Tanjung Malai
And if you wish to go for Island Hopping
Sekiranya anda ingin pergi ke Island Hopping
Here is where you can get the boats
Di sinilah anda boleh mendapatkan bot
Exactly right there!!
Tepat sekali.. di situ!!
It may cost you per boat around 3 to 4 hundred ringgit
Ia mungkin berharga sekitar 3 ke 4 ratus ringgit satu bot

Lesson : Simple Present Verb,  Simple Future Verb, Present Perfect Verb

1. is called bermakna dinamakan. Apabila menyusun imbuhan di pada katakerja, caranya di dalam bahasa Inggeris ialah : (verb to be) + (perfect Verb)
Contoh lain : Kedai itu dibuka pukul 10pagi
The shop is opened at 10am
2. If you wish to go… Perhatikan apabila menggunakan sesuatu katakerja di dalam kawasan Object, salah satu caranya ialah dengan menggunakan perkataan to diikuti dengan katakerja.
Contoh lain : Saya hendak pergi ke kedai
I want to go to the shop
3. Tetapi, apabila menggunakan katakerja future seperti will, may, can, must dan should, perkataan to tidak boleh digunakan!!
Contoh : It may cost..
Ia mungkin berharga..
Contoh lain : Saya akan pergi ke kedai
I will go to the shop

Airport Taxi – Lesson1

Dialogue

Selamat Petang
Good Evening
Ya.. nak pergi mana dik?
Yes.. where do you want to go (lit.. want to go where sister?)
..aa ok saya nak ke Kuah
ok.. I want to go to Kuah
..dik, Kuah di mana tu?
.. sister, which part of Kuah is that? (lit.. Kuah where that?)
Saya nak ke..aa jeti Kuah
I want to (go).. (to) Kuah jetty

Lesson

1. ‘nak’ is a slang.. short for ‘hendak’. Another word which is commonly used in replacement of hendak is ‘mahu’. The proper Malay sentence would be : ‘Mahu pergi ke mana dik?’

2. ‘dik’ is hort for ‘adik’, which means both younger brother or sister. In Malay culture, it is respectable to address someone by title ‘adik’ (for someone younger than us) or abang (brother – for someone older than us) or kakak (sister – for someone older than us)

3. Saya nak pergi can also be presented by ‘Saya mahu pergi’

4. Kuah di mana – sounds like where is Kuah? but that is not the case.. Because it is said after the lady at the counter knows the client wants to go to Kuah.. it means which part of Kuah.

5. In Malay, it is common to ommit ‘you’. A full sentence of ‘Where do you want to go?’ is  ‘Awak mahu pergi ke mana?’
